(Yes, on Halloween. I’ll give you a candy bar if you come in costume.)

I’ll be traveling to sunny San Diego, CA this October 31st for the Step Up Your Game conference focusing on engaging older youth in afterschool. I’ll be hosting and moderating… Continue reading

On the First Day of School… Response to Jay Matthews

The other day a friend brought the following piece by Washington Post journalist Jay Matthews to my attention.

In it Jay asks readers to “Give us your ideal schools.” To get the ball rolling Jay proffered two models for consideration: A) New York Performance Standards Consortium and B) KIPP schools.

As I read through the models I was lured in. Each model offered a tasty bite: The NY Performance schools bring in external reviewers during their performance assessment; KIPP has a longer school day, and, based… Continue reading

Looking to the Future of STEM in Afterschool: The Time is Right

On Tuesday, May 16, I was a panelist for the After School Alliance Afterschool for All Challenge, an annual convening designed to put a critical mass of after-school providers and stakeholders into well-equipped action with elected officials in Washington DC to make the case for afterschool as a right, a need and a worthwhile investment. Under the leadership of their STEM policy director, Anita Krishnamurthi, the Alliance is developing a STEM policy platform to help ensure science, technology, engineering and mathematics are woven into the fabric of after school offerings available to young people. They’ve launched a high-impact website for STEM and Afterschool. Furthermore the Afterschool Alliance, along with the National Afterschool Association and the National Summer Learning Association, are committed to highlighting the power of summer and afterschool in STEM learning and have pledged to make 2011 the Year of Science in Afterschool.
