STEM, the White House, and the Change We Need Now for Women and Girls.

December 11, 2011

Each month the White House convenes groups monthly as “Champions for Change” – a chance for a diverse cross-section of stakeholders to come together with policy makers and talk about what the issues are, what’s working – and where we need to go from here.

Last week I was invited to be represent Project Exploration as a  “notable guest” at a Champions for Change convening held by the Office of Public Engagement and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. In addition… Continue reading

Girls’ Health and Science Day

It's about inspiring the young mind of today's teenage girl as well as equipping her with the general knowledge about respecting herself and her body. Various student representative from schools like ACE Technical Charter High School, Perspectives - Rodney D. Joslin, and Yound Women's Leadership Charter School attended Project Exploration's annual Girls Health & Science Day. In its eleventh year, this one of a kind conference geared for young ladies in grades 7 thru 10 was held at School of Social Service Administration, located near University of Chicago Hospital and campus. These student representatives were encouraged to address concerns and ask questions in which they would receive frank yet direct answers during their group sessions without the snickering and giggling. For the Girls! A National Collaboration Conference

On a Thursday morning in Washington D.C., just blocks from the Capitol Building, one-hundred and twenty attendees gathered to discuss the importance of girls in STEM. This first National Girls Collaborative Project Conference brought together organizations and national experts to provide a space for learning and collaboration on the issue.

The morning began with the girls themselves. A panel of middle and high school girls answered questions about why they got involved in STEM and what keeps them interested. It was great to hear the girls suggestions actually highlight the… Continue reading

The All Girls Expedition kicked-off on Wednesday, July 7 with an orientation for students and their parents. It was a great… Continue reading

Girls’ Health and Science and Day isn’t just for Girls!

What do 86 girls from six Chicago Public Schools have in common? They all were able to interact in a day that was fully dedicated to learning more about their bodies, self-esteem, relationships, and health. Thursday, March 25th marked the ten-year anniversary of a great conference for 7-10th grade girls to gather together in a safe space to learn and ask those uncomfortable questions that they normally would be embarrassed to. While the girls participated in sessions learning about self-defense, health, and reproduction; their teachers were involved in a professional… Continue reading

Girl Power at the Motorola Innovation Generation Conference

2005 was a good year: it was the year Eileen Sweeney signed on to direct the Motorola Foundation - and the field of science in out of school time hasn’t really been the same since. The Foundation does grantmaking to the tune of $20+ million annually in more than 25 countries and about 25% ($5 million) of it has been targeted at infusing the field of science in out of school time through funding for direct service, new programs and strategic initiatives. Surrounding Eileen is her enthusiastic posse: Carol, Brian,… Continue reading
