Closing Plenary: What’s Really Going on Here?
It is amazing that we are at the end!!
The final plenary session is just beginning. This is the summation of the working session.
TOPIC AREAS
- Program design/curriculum
- Evaluation
- Youth Development
- Policy
- Technology
- Professional Development
Challenges
- Identity as a field: what, who defines our work? What is the relationship to school time? Is there a dichotomy? Are we STEM or Youth Development? Very diverse, but can it all be brought together?
- Articulating goals and value to society: how to brand, how to get funding if we cannot tell the… Continue reading
Concurrent Session 1: National Youth Organizations
Girl Scouts
Their first badges were for aviation and electricity, so STEM has been foundational for their organization! The push leadership to help kids become leaders in whatever situation they are put in. Leadership Journeys are multidisciplinary programs that gives girls examples of what they can do to change the world. It’s your Planet, Love It is the most STEM focused. They are also in the process of upgrading all of the badges to help girls grow and become better citizens. That is the… Continue reading
Working Session on Older Youth
EPIC!
Since my laptop is set up in this room, I found myself eavesdropping on a fascinating conversation about ways to get older youth into the equation. After 2 hours of intense collaborative discussion in breakout session, the open discussion came down to figuring out the role of culture in branding STEM. Profound. Split into Policy, Research & Practice, the round table participants really dug into the scary questions about delivering science to young people living lives that appear fragmented to them, but really they simply are unaware of how… Continue reading
Putting Youth at the Center: Robert Tai
Robert Tai , Associate Professor at University of Virgina
He does workforce development, which feels like admitting an addiction given all that has preceded his talk today!
Telling us story about his brother who does science for fun, not for work. Robert told him that university scientists were reporting spending 60 – 80 hours a week in the lab. His bother snorted that this was low, should be 100-120 per week. Incredulous, he asked, “When do you sleep?” His brother replied that he thought that spending only 60 –… Continue reading
Putting Youth at the Center: Discussion
What an amazing panel! At one point, Gil Noam asked if we could turn it into a debate since the positions were so interesting and varied! Your live blogger, Dr. Anna B. Scott, posting up quick snapshots of the closing discussion for “Putting Youth at the Center of Systems & Pathways.” Were I to attempt a summation, I would say that programmers are very concerned about the cost-effectiveness of generating data on their programs while striving to deliver them at a high level. Researchers, however, are concerned that… Continue reading
Putting Youth at the Center: Tony Streit
Tony Streit , Educational Development Center
Sharing results from a convention on STEM Workforce Development
Is there a tension between science literacy and STEM development? This is sidebar conversation that he would like to have today.
Earlier this year, the NSF brought the people together who had received ITEST [Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers] from them to influence future research in this area.
NSF wants the people in this room and your community to apply for funding from this program to prepare a workforce in the Sciences. NSF… Continue reading
Putting Youth at the Center: Bronwyn Bevan
Bronwyn Bevan of the San Francisco Exploratorium:
She was greeted with one big whoop from them “I get a paycheck from them!”
In her talk, the Exploratorium found that the field is terribly underspecified. “Out of school time setting” is usually very different from person to person. Because of this lack of specificiation there are a lot of assumption about what is considered science.
It is almost an identitiy crisis, or maybe in the field there are a lot of questions about the different goals, pressures, ambitions between… Continue reading
