Out of School Time

Project Exploration launches Brothers4Science!

Building off of our successful services for girls programs (Sisters4Science, All Girls Expedition, and Girl’s Health and Science Day), Project Exploration is excited to introduce its newest program—Brothers4Science!  With the support of the University of Chicago’s Neighborhood Schools Program, this exciting new program is being piloted in three south side schools—Ariel Academy, Mollison Elementary, and Till Elementary. Brothers4Science is a year-round after-school program for middle-school boys that combines science exploration with leadership development.  At first glance, you may think Brothers4Science is just like… Continue reading

Sisters4Science- Reflections of Knowledge Part 2 – Young Women’s Leadership Charter School

Project Exploration's Sisters4Science ...changing (as well as challenging) young women's minds via science education. Today was the final Sisters4Science session at Young Women's Leadership Charter School which featured presentations by its "doctor" participants. Each one gave detailed summaries of what they learned over the past few months while attending this after school program. First there was a cheery welcome by Doctor Temia Holmes and a fun interactive name game where each person including SouthSide and her daughter had to say their name and favorite color. That was followed by by an Introduction by Doctor Kennedy Hill stating that Sisters4Science program not only provided them with a hands-on experience but it also served as place where they could be themselves ...to hang out and discuss privately. I Would Sing: (Re) Framing Education for Liberation and Democracy – April 29, 2011

"...I would like to be known as a person who is concerned about freedom, equality, justice and prosperity for all people..." ~ Amos Paul Kennedy Jr Hey, readers, meet SouthSide - the social activist! Recently she attended an unconventional conference where educators, teachers, social activists, organizers, etc from all walks of life and backgrounds came together for one common goal - to celebrate the themes inspired by the work and life of Bill Ayers. Held at Chicago-University of Illinois campus, the unconference conference (so titled by Master of Ceremonies, David Stovall) didn't feature long winded boring speeches or reading of panelists' bios followed by one set group of pre-arranged action plans and/or agendas. No, PE blog readers, this was a "working" conference where a collective of ideas, plans as well as agendas that were individually suggested within different groups during the afternoon session. To be honest, this wasn't any ordinary conference SouthSide has ever attended that she didn't fall asleep on or did a whole page of doodlings while the panelists spoke. According to Rick Ayers, Bill's brother, he has "...seen other conferences like [I Would Sing] built around someone's unique contribution..." He also went on to say this conference was "...in a certain way a reflection of the work of Bill Ayers..." adding "...thinking forward to future work in relation to him and his work..." Commencement: Innovate to Educate; Update 4 from Washington, DC

On January 6th, the day the 22 Presidential Mentors received their awards for excellence in science, mathematics and engingeering mentoring, the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation, Cora Marrett, closed the ceremony with the following words. “This is a commencement.”

A commencement. The beginning of starting something.

None of us who spent four days in Washington for the award symposium and ceremony knew the following when we arrived:

That we’d be part of an extradordinary group of passionate educators dedicated to making change at all levels of the… Continue reading

Chicago LISC highlights Sisters4Science – and the value of after-school for student engagement.

In the new issue of LISC’s newsletter, there’s a feature article about the value of afterschool to student engagement at Perspectives Calumet Middle School. The featured program? Sisters4Science. Way to go girls!!!

LISC/Chicago organizes capital and other resources to support initiatives that will stimulate the comprehensive development of healthy, stable neighborhoods and foster their connection to the socioeconomic mainstream of the metropolitan region. As the Broader-Bolder Approach to Education (among others) has documented, access to high-quality out-of-school experiences is one of the key contributors to the persistence of the… Continue reading

“Fave five” lessons about high school graduation and changing the face of science

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 was not really an exceptional day – unless you count having a glimpse through a window onto a world often unknown, rarely understood: What does it take to change the face of science? We got a sighting of it at Project Exploration’s Senior Celebration, held at the Garfield Park Conservatory. We graduated 38 seniors this year from 17 Chicago Public High Schools.

Our graduates are worth noting. Most of Project Exploration’s 300+ students come from schools where graduation isn’t a given. 12,000 students drop out… Continue reading

Clarion call for science in out of school time…

When it comes to equity and access in education students whose families are in lower economic brackets are often left out – particularly when it comes to what happens for these students during the summer months. While it’s normal for middle and upper middle class families to enroll their children in “enrichment” programs during the summer, such programs can be hard to find, hard to get to, or simply too expensive for other families.

The Coalition for the Public Understanding of Science (COPUS) is featuring a story in… Continue reading
