Paul Sereno

Hey PE Students Check out the New Dino – Eodromaeus!!!

Hello Project Exploration Students,

Hope all is well as January comes to a close. If you haven’t heard, Dr. Paul Sereno recently a new scientific announcement last week! On Thursday, January 13th at 1pm, Dr. Sereno introduced the world to a small Triassic dinosaur called Eodromaeus murphi. This small carnivorous dino stood around 4 feet and weighed 10 – 15 pounds. The dinosaur fossils were about 90 percent complete and found in Argentina, South America. Dr. Sereno believes this dinosaur lived approximately 230 million years ago, around the dawning… Continue reading

Introducing Eodromaeus – The Dawn Runner!

Meet a new, lanky dinosaur that roamed South America in search of prey as the age of dinosaurs began, approximately 230 million years ago. Sporting a long neck and tail, growing to roughly 4-feet long and weighing only 10-to-15-pounds, the new predator has been named Eodromaeus, the “dawn runner.” With saber-shaped teeth and clawed grasping hands, Eodromaeus (“dawn runner”) was a ferocious predator of small animals and the young of larger animals. According to University of Chicago paleontologist and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Paul Sereno, “It really is the earliest look we have at the long line of meat eaters that would ultimately culminate in Tyrannosaurus rex near the end of the dinosaur era. Review of WHEN CROCS ATE DINOSAURS!!

SuperCrocAttack_4k.psd

Earlier this month (December 6) I was lucky enough to attend a special screening for National Geographic’s latest documentary WHEN CROCS ATE DINOSAURS. When I received the invitation to this event I did not hesitate to reply. This monster of a film really shows the adventure Paul Sereno had on his expedition. Paul Sereno is a paleontologist at the university of chicago and some of his discoveries include Supercroc and the African dino giant Jobaria. These discoveries from the far reaches of the world should give some idea of… Continue reading

Film screening brings science to life (along with a few crocs, too!)

On Sunday, December 6 Project Exploration partnered with the Chicago Council on Science and Technology to host our first-ever public film screening. Thanks to National Geographic we were able to make the showing available for free and nearly 400 people came out on a cold, grey Sunday to see the film, talk with Paul Sereno and, best of all, get up close and personal with the newest toothy faces to emerge from the Saharan Cretaceous. (A very special shout out to Project Exploration lab interns Randy and Bianca, and… Continue reading

Behind the Scenes Interview: Building the Five Ancient Crocs at the UC Fossil Lab

by Danica Tiu Project Exploration President and Cofounder, Paul Sereno, unleashed a menagerie of ancient crocodiles, the likes of which have not roamed the earth for at least 100 million years. Preparing the crocs for their re-emergence from the depths of time, however, has been a project almost a decade in the making. We are joined today by a number of special guests from the University of Chicago Fossil Lab– Senior Fossil Preparator Bob Masek (BM), as well as Paleoartists Tyler Keillor (TK) and Erin Fitzgerald (EF). Each member of the Sereno lab has been involved with the crocs in a number of different capacities: fossil prep, molding, casting, and flesh reconstruction, to name a few. Continue reading

Students Help Prepare Croc Fossils

This summer, Project Exploration students Randy and Bianca had the opportunity to observe and assist Dr. Paul Sereno’s lab with crocodile research and fossil preparation Continue reading

Q and A with University of Chicago Fossil Lab Staff on the Making of Raptorex

by Danica Tiu

With us today are Erin Fitzgerald and Tyler Keillor, the creative masterminds behind bringing Raptorex to life. Readers of Project Exploration blog might not be familiar with the name Erin Fitzgerald, perhaps because she is one of the lab’s newer employees. Although Erin has actually been working at the lab for a few years now, Raptorex is her first flesh model reconstruction.

Q: Erin, could you tell us about yourself, your background, and how you became involved in reconstructing Raptorex?

Erin: I have an art background… Continue reading
