Boys at Emmett Till Math and Science Academy Take on Science After School with Project Exploration

Brothers4Science is a year-round after-school program that combines science exploration with leadership development for approximately 50 minority middle school boys. Currently the program is run in partnership with three schools across Chicago— Ariel Community Academy, Mollison Elementary School, and Emmett Till Elementary.

It’s amazing to see how much the boys of Brothers4Science (B4S) at Till Math and Science Academy have become more comfortable with science concepts—and even more comfortable with each other—since we first began in February. In the past weeks of B4S, the group has had struggles and successes, frustrations and breakthroughs, and a lot of fun learning. Not a session goes by that’s not filled with the students’ laughter. Directing their abundant energy toward engaged learning has been our main task, and has manifested in a lot of different ways.

We’ve really tried to focus on journaling at Till, writing journal entries once per session. At first, the boys were very reluctant to express themselves in their journals, perhaps partly due to their notion of writing as a non-masculine activity. Breaking this stereotype has been a constant goal as we continue to focus on journals, since one of the aims of the program is to improve not just the boys’ science skills, but their communication skills as well. Student Reflections on Science Digest—The Science of Whiskers

What did you do on your day off of school? Most students were glued to their bed hanging out at home, but not at Project Exploration. Project Exploration hosted its first Science Digest of the year. “What is Science Digest,” you ask? Science Digest is a series of small gatherings where students enjoy a meal with scientists to learn about a specific topic and talk about career pathways. Yes, that’s right, science and food—but not necessarily food science. In this case, 14 Project Exploration students woke up early in the… Continue reading

Sisters4Science- Reflections of Knowledge Part 2 – Young Women’s Leadership Charter School

Project Exploration's Sisters4Science ...changing (as well as challenging) young women's minds via science education. Today was the final Sisters4Science session at Young Women's Leadership Charter School which featured presentations by its "doctor" participants. Each one gave detailed summaries of what they learned over the past few months while attending this after school program. First there was a cheery welcome by Doctor Temia Holmes and a fun interactive name game where each person including SouthSide and her daughter had to say their name and favorite color. That was followed by by an Introduction by Doctor Kennedy Hill stating that Sisters4Science program not only provided them with a hands-on experience but it also served as place where they could be themselves ...to hang out and discuss privately. I Would Sing: (Re) Framing Education for Liberation and Democracy – April 29, 2011

"...I would like to be known as a person who is concerned about freedom, equality, justice and prosperity for all people..." ~ Amos Paul Kennedy Jr Hey, readers, meet SouthSide - the social activist! Recently she attended an unconventional conference where educators, teachers, social activists, organizers, etc from all walks of life and backgrounds came together for one common goal - to celebrate the themes inspired by the work and life of Bill Ayers. Held at Chicago-University of Illinois campus, the unconference conference (so titled by Master of Ceremonies, David Stovall) didn't feature long winded boring speeches or reading of panelists' bios followed by one set group of pre-arranged action plans and/or agendas. No, PE blog readers, this was a "working" conference where a collective of ideas, plans as well as agendas that were individually suggested within different groups during the afternoon session. To be honest, this wasn't any ordinary conference SouthSide has ever attended that she didn't fall asleep on or did a whole page of doodlings while the panelists spoke. According to Rick Ayers, Bill's brother, he has "...seen other conferences like [I Would Sing] built around someone's unique contribution..." He also went on to say this conference was "...in a certain way a reflection of the work of Bill Ayers..." adding "...thinking forward to future work in relation to him and his work..." Hey PE Students Check out the New Dino – Eodromaeus!!!

Hello Project Exploration Students,

Hope all is well as January comes to a close. If you haven’t heard, Dr. Paul Sereno recently a new scientific announcement last week! On Thursday, January 13th at 1pm, Dr. Sereno introduced the world to a small Triassic dinosaur called Eodromaeus murphi. This small carnivorous dino stood around 4 feet and weighed 10 – 15 pounds. The dinosaur fossils were about 90 percent complete and found in Argentina, South America. Dr. Sereno believes this dinosaur lived approximately 230 million years ago, around the dawning… Continue reading

Q + A with Paul Sereno from the Eodromaeus Announcement

Two of Project Exploration’s partner schools got a sneak peek at the science – and prepared questions for Paul Sereno for the January 13, 2011 press announcement and live webcast.

Their questions  are below.  Watch the video for Paul’s answers to the questions during the press announcement.

We are extremely grateful to Project Exploration’s Neil Campbell Fellows Graciela Macias, Marianne Madsen  and the Haugan Science Team here in Chicago and Sarah Barnum and the girls at our Palo Alto, CA partner school, Castilleja, who worked… Continue reading
