Project Exploration launches Brothers4Science!

Building off of our successful services for girls programs (Sisters4Science, All Girls Expedition, and Girl’s Health and Science Day), Project Exploration is excited to introduce its newest program—Brothers4Science!  With the support of the University of Chicago’s Neighborhood Schools Program, this exciting new program is being piloted in three south side schools—Ariel Academy, Mollison Elementary, and Till Elementary. Brothers4Science is a year-round after-school program for middle-school boys that combines science exploration with leadership development.  At first glance, you may think Brothers4Science is just like… Continue reading

Student Reflections on Science Digest—The Science of Whiskers

What did you do on your day off of school? Most students were glued to their bed hanging out at home, but not at Project Exploration. Project Exploration hosted its first Science Digest of the year. “What is Science Digest,” you ask? Science Digest is a series of small gatherings where students enjoy a meal with scientists to learn about a specific topic and talk about career pathways. Yes, that’s right, science and food—but not necessarily food science. In this case, 14 Project Exploration students woke up early in the… Continue reading

How to Train a Scientist!

These ambitious students met for eight hours with Project Exploration staff to develop and create a new spring break program for Project Exploration students. Many would wonder why would these graduate students be interested in working with Chicago Public School high school students? Continue reading

Fashion and Science???

This past Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, Project Exploration received a great event. New York fashion designer, Eileen Fisher, released her new Fall 2010 fashion line for numerous guests in the downtown Nordstrom store. The event, held on the third floor of the Nordstrom store, was to help sponsor Project Exploration’s programs, which the proceeds went to. It  was all decked out in white linens and flashing lights. On the chairs were gift bags with PE’s information, an Eileen Fisher catalog, and a free scarf from Eileen’s new collection.… Continue reading

The Wheels They Are a Turning!

Today has been a most amazing time at National Science & Technology conference in Out-of-School Time. Starting with a rousing keynote speech from Pedro A. Noguera Ph.D on the importance of this field for our students to compete on a global market and meeting them where they are to listening to a panel of funders explain why they believe in the importance of STEM in OST. So many questions have come out haven arisen on how can we as service providers, organizations, and practitioners better provide more services to more… Continue reading

Ready or not, here comes a science after school…conference!

I am rather excited to get to the conference tomorrow! Which conference? Tomorrow, Wednesday September 22nd, initiates Science & Technology in Out-Of-School-Time, a national conference. Who am I? I am your guest live blogger for the event, Dr. Anna B. Scott. I’ll work to keep a running report of the panels I attend to help you ground those after-session debates in facts.

Well, maybe.

I am so excited by this gathering because I have a 7th grade son who is technically always out of school–he is home schooled in… Continue reading

Cracking the Case with Project Exploration

Project Exploration closed out 2009 with a bang at the annual Winter Science Exploration event. This year the event was hosted at the Museum of Science and Industry and the day was centered around forensics. PE students from around the city of Chicago faced the bitter cold to meet up on December 29th for a fun filled day of science.

With so many forensic themed television shows  students have increasingly expressed their interest in learning more about the field. What better way for students to learn more about forensics… Continue reading
