In the new issue of LISC’s newsletter, there’s a feature article about the value of afterschool to student engagement at Perspectives Calumet Middle School. The featured program? Sisters4Science. Way to go girls!!!

LISC/Chicago organizes capital and other resources to support initiatives that will stimulate the comprehensive development of healthy, stable neighborhoods and foster their connection to the socioeconomic mainstream of the metropolitan region. As the Broader-Bolder Approach to Education (among others) has documented, access to high-quality out-of-school experiences is one of the key contributors to the persistence of the… Continue reading

Sisters4Science at Reavis Study Urban Animals

Over the past few weeks, the Sisters4Science students of Reavis Elementary School in Hyde Park have been studying local animals with professional women scientists. The students had the opportunity to study three types of animals who are their neighbors here in Chicago: turtles, squirrels, and birds!

On Thursday, November 5, students met veterinary assistant Cathy Patrick who works at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center. Cathy and the girls talked about the two types of turtles that live in Chicago – terrestrial and aquatic. Students then met four live turtles and… Continue reading

Sisters4Science First Students to Study Ancient Crocodiles!

Sisters4Science students from Young Women’s Leadership Charter School and Perspectives Charter School – Calumet were among the first in the world to view and interact with the recently discovered ancient crocodiles! For Project Exploration, providing students access to the world of discoveries is the key to inspiring our next generation of scientists.

Sara ElShafie, a student and coordinator at Dr. Paul Sereno’s Fossil Lab, brought casts of the five new fossil crocs: BoarCroc, DogCroc, RatCroc, PancakeCroc, and DuckCroc.  The students learned about how small pieces of evidence,… Continue reading

Forensics with Sisters4Science

The Sisters4Science participants of Perspectives Charter School – Calumet Middle School have been busy exploring forensic science with professional women scientists. What is forensics? The use of scientific principles to help the legal system solve crimes! It’s a vast field, so we decided to focus on two aspects: forensic chemistry and latent print examination.

On October 20, 2009 the girls learned about forensic chemistry from Women in Science member Tania Bedrosian, a microbiologist at Abbott. Tania explained how a substance called luminol reacts with a… Continue reading

I scream: Sisters4Science makes ice cream using chemistry!

Sisters4Science, Project Exploration’s weekly science and leadership program for middle-school girls, has been running for four weeks at Perspectives Charter School – Calumet campus. Every Tuesday, 11 amazing girls meet after school to do hands-on science with professional women scientists who are members of Project Exploration’s Women in Science program.

The science we do in Sisters4Science is based on the girls’ interests. In our very first session, the students took a survey and expressed their interest in chemistry, animals, forensics, and the human body.

Before diving into… Continue reading

Girl Power at the Motorola Innovation Generation Conference

2005 was a good year: it was the year Eileen Sweeney signed on to direct the Motorola Foundation - and the field of science in out of school time hasn’t really been the same since. The Foundation does grantmaking to the tune of $20+ million annually in more than 25 countries and about 25% ($5 million) of it has been targeted at infusing the field of science in out of school time through funding for direct service, new programs and strategic initiatives. Surrounding Eileen is her enthusiastic posse: Carol, Brian,… Continue reading
