Project Exploration Helps Students Go To College

The majority of Project Exploration’s students are first generation college-bound. With innumerable forms to fill out, sudden deadlines, and tough personal essays, applying to college can be daunting to students and families unfamiliar with the process. To provide students with the tools they need to navigate the journey, Project Exploration hosted its fifth annual College Weekend in October, reaching 34 students and family members.

College Weekend is a two-day program for students and their families that consists of both college application and essay writing workshops. On the first day, the college application workshop focuses on equipping students with the knowledge and resources they need to apply to the college of their choice.

Speakers from various colleges and organizations provide presentations on how to take the ACT test, what admissions officers look for in an application, and how to apply for financial aid.

At the conclusion of the college application workshop, a panel of students currently enrolled in universities give advice and answer questions about their personal experiences in college. On the second day of College Weekend, the writing workshop helps students compose an effective college essay or personal statement by working with a professional writer. After discovering what an essay topic should REALLY address, participants take time to practice writing and receive critiques on their work.

As one student put it, thanks to Project Exploration, …I learned today no matter who you are you can go to college.” In the months ahead, we look forward to supporting students as they pursue life and learning beyond high school graduation.
