Expeditions
A camel caravan carries supplies and people through the Sahara. Camels play an important role in the lives of the Toureg people of Niger. Reconstructing small fossils found during an expedition to China in 2001. The claw of Suchomimus (foreground, left) points the way to more fossils.
Gabrielle Lyon (center) and expedition team members search for small fossils under the 120 degree heat of the Saharan sun. An expedition requires lightweight, maneuverable vehicles to transport people and supplies across the desert and to search for fossils in rocky or sandy terrain. Dr. Paul Sereno (right) and his team scan the Niger horizon for signs of fossil beds. The jaws of Sarcosuchus (a.k.a. SuperCroc) lay buried in the Saharan sand for millions of years until discovered by Dr. Paul Sereno in 2000.
The expedition team lays behind Sarcosuchus’ jaws, marking out how long this “SuperCroc” was when alive. Wodaabe are nomadic herders and traders. Historically, the routes they traveled in western Africa linked together isolated civilizations. Preparing for a traditional Wodaabe celebration in Niger. An expedition team in Niger prepares a jacketed fossil for transport.
The Ischigualasto valley in Argentina was the discovery site of Eoraptor and Herrerasaurus. Expedition teams spend upwards of four months in the desert in order to reconstruct was dinosaur life was like on Africa over 100 million years ago.
