About The Green Sahara

In 2000, a major archaeological discovery made in Niger by a team led by paleontologist Paul Sereno opened a window onto the “Green Sahara.” Called Gobero (GOH-ber-oh), after the Tuareg name for the area, the site revealed a 5,000-year-long drama of changing climate and changing cultures.

The Gobero Story will give you an overview of the significance of the site, as well as links to Kiffian and Tenerean photo galleries. A Gobero Timeline puts the discoveries and the dates of the site into an historic context. A Fact Sheet lists the key discoveries. Interviews with specialist team members, bioarchaeologist Chris Stojanowski and zooarchaeologist Helene Jousse, personalize the science behind the story.

The video below shows what it was like to excavate a skeleton at Gobero.
