Project Exploration proudly presents "www.jobaria.org." This site was launched at 2pm on November 11, 1999 - simultaneous with the announcement of Jobaria, a new dinosaur giant from Africa. One of Project Exploration's missions is to make the excitement of new dinosaur discoveries accessible to the public - and especially children. This site is designed to do just that. There are four sections: The Orientation area provides access to press releases, photos and images available for use in publications, recent articles and links to other sites. In the Jobaria section visitors can learn more about what makes this dinosaur unique. Make sure to learn about how an elephant named Angus helped the team figure out whether or not Jobaria could rear on its hind legs. An interactive skeleton gives you a close up of Jobaria's characteristic anatomy. Build a Dinosaur is an illustrated step-by-step journey along the route of building a dinosaur - from finding the bones in the Sahara Desert to erecting the skeleton and sharing the discovery. Learn about how Paul Sereno ran in the Chicago Marathon (!) to raise money to build the skeleton of Jobaria. Background information about the 1997 expedition is available in The Expedition. Supply stat sheets, a route map, biographies of team members and diary excerpts from one of the team members. One of the highlights is the "Sahara Connection" exhibit - created from letters sent between Chicago Public School children and expedition members during the 1997 Expedition to Niger. Teacher Tracks is a collection of interdisciplinary thought-provoking questions, activities and classroom extensions designed for teachers and parents to use with students. Where to Look is an activity designed for grades 6-8 that asks students to combine information from research reports, geologic and geographic maps to decide where is the best place to look for Cretaceous dinosaurs. This activity is based on the real site where Jobaria was discovered. |
