Project Exploration Awarded Empowerment Grant from
Motorola Mobility Foundation

Grant will fund new Science Media Communications program

Chicago, IL, October 3, 2011 —Project Exploration has been awarded a $5,000 Empowerment Grant from the Motorola Mobility Foundation to fund Project Exploration’s six-week Science Media Communications (SMC) program, which will introduce students to the digital arts and illustrate how to apply their skills to report on their experiences in science. Students will receive training from technology experts and writers, journalists, and mentors to build portfolios of their work for publication on Project Exploration’s website.

This funding will allow Project Exploration to empower its students to communicate effectively about science using digital tools, resources, and new media skills of the 21st century. Through partnerships with experts and mentors in the field, the program will provide students with opportunities to learn, practice, and hone their digital media arts skills. Students will present and share information in diverse ways by creating and editing original photos, blogs and podcasts. Through the SMC program, students will build essential skills in communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and the use of technology for accomplishing their goals.

“We are excited and honored to win an Empowerment Grant from the Motorola Mobility Foundation,” said Project Exploration co-founder and executive director, Gabrielle Lyon. “These funds will enable Project Exploration to further engage students in Chicago with technology in an effort to enhance their lives. Our new Science Media Communications program will serve as an important addition to Project Exploration’s youth-science pathways efforts by enabling students to develop skills and career exposure in science reporting with new media tools in the 21st Century.”

The Empowerment Grants support programs that leverage technology to build stronger communities and will provide non-profit organizations with funding to close the digital divide. Successful programs may include providing technology, and the skills needed to use it, for teachers, mentors and community leaders.

“The Empowerment Grants program is designed to help non-profits use new technologies, including digital media, to reach their mission and help strengthen communities,” said Eileen Sweeney, director of the Motorola Mobility Foundation. “I’d like to congratulate this group of non-profits who are exploring innovative ways to use emerging technologies to help solve serious social issues.”
