Biodiversity: What Can You Do

Biodiversity is threatened in places all over the world. It may seem that there is little that you can do about tigers living in India or elephants in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, you can play an important role in the conservation of species both at home and in foreign countries.

Here are some ideas about how you can get involved.

  • Tell your friends and parents about biodiversity and conservation
  • Be wise in how you use resources
  • Be wise in how you vote
  • Support international organizations such as the Wildlife Conservation Society or the World Wildlife Fund that work on conservation issues around the world
  • Get involved in local chapters of conservation organizations such as the Sierra Club
  • Let your parents and friends encourage lawmakers to seek funding for infrastructure and conservation in developing countries.
Encouraging politicians to be interested in and care about conservation issues can lead to great things. Just recently, as part of France’s plan for debt relief to very poor countries, an agreement was made between France and Cameroon that approximately 25 million dollars will be invested in protecting and managing Cameroon’s forests. Part of this plan is also to reduce poverty in areas in and near forests. To read more click here.
