In Maui and Kauai, Hawaii, campers work to conserve and protect beaches, spring-fed wetlands and a dune ecosystem. Other activities include sea turtle research, native plant restoration as well as hiking, surfing and snorkeling.

Archaeology Field Experience Topic(s): Archeology
Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center
La Crosse, WI Grade(s): 12+, 9 to 10, 11 to 12
Students will explore what it is like on an actual archaeological excavation, working alongside professional archaeologists in the field. They will participate in small-scale excavations (test units) and survey work. Lab work may include washing ceramics, stone tools and other remains, and sorting them into basic categories. An experimental archaeology component may explore making stone tools and pottery. Optional lab hours and local field trips will be available after regular field-school hours. Supervised dorm facilities are available at an additional cost of $155 for three days. Scholarships may be available based on interest in archaeology, financial need and grade point average.
Eligibility Requirements: This experience is open to high-school students through adults. No previous experience is necessary.

Call of the Wild Topic(s): Environmental and Conservation Science

At the Mission: Wolf refuge, campers assist the staff in the care and feeding of the wolves. They observe and document wolf behavior to make sure the animals are well-adjusted. Those working on the new barn lend their hands to the construction site; those with a knack for design might work on restoring the native landscape.

Camp R.E.A.L. Topic(s): Ecology

This mini-session, designed for youth between the ages of 3 and 21 with or without disabilities, focuses on ecology and fun. The program consists of crafts, sports and ecology activities at Lovelace Park in Evanston. Two field trips are included.
Eligibility Requirements: Students ages 3 through 21 are welcome to apply.

College First: Science, College and Careers Topic(s): Ecology
Chicago Botanic Gardens
Glencoe, IL Grade(s): 10 to 12
College First is a dynamic paid internship program for eligible CPS students, consisting of part career mentorship, part field ecology and conservation science, and part college prep and assistance. For eight weeks, students in the program explore potential science careers and use the Garden's resources to learn about native ecosystems and plants. A portion of each day is spent with a mentor from the Garden staff, and the other portion in group instruction. During monthly meetings over the school year, emphasis is also placed on college as a pathway to any career and guidance is given.
Eligibility Requirements: Current college Students. Bus stops through the city are offered since the Garden is in a northern suburb; applicants must be able to get to a designated stop as early as 7am. See web site and application for bus stops.

Ecology Counselor in Training Topic(s): Environmental and Conservation Science

In this program, students will learn what it takes to be a camp counselor. They will spend the first two weeks training in communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork skills. During the second two weeks, participants will work as a counselor for either Kinglet Camp or EcoQuest Camp. They will also learn about topics such as responsible resource use, how to be a good Eco role model and how to help campers to be more Earth friendly.
Eligibility Requirements: Students entering grades 7 through 9 are welcome to apply.

Field Ecology Summer Camp Topic(s): Environmental and Conservation Science
Lake Superior State University School of Engineering and Technology
Sault Ste. Marie, MI Grade(s): 9 to 10, 11 to 12
This science program is for students entering grades 10-12 with an interest in ecology, fish and wildlife management or other aspects of natural resources. The program offers experience ecology through background research and working up field samples in state-of-the-art biology labs. Participants will analyze data in computer labs and learn how GIS and other computer applications help in ecology and conservation biology. Field activities include plant and animal identification, landscape interpretation, habitat analysis, stream quality assessment, mammal tracking, bird banding, fish capture, aquatic insect analysis, night-time insect trapping and more.
Eligibility Requirements: Students with an interest in biology and the out-of-doors are welcome to apply.

Fire and Sky Topic(s): Environmental and Conservation Science
The Road Less Traveled

Campers in this program backpack in the mountains in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, then desert hike and whitewater raft in Utah. They'll also visit with Navajo Indians. By the time they leave, campers are able to navigate off trail by map and compass, efficiently pressure breathe at high altitude and locate the perfect campsite. No previous experience is required.

Girls on Ice Topic(s): Geology
North Cascades Institute
Sedro-Woolley, WA Grade(s): 9 to 10, 11 to 12
Girls on Ice is an eleven-day leadership program that combines mountaineering and science. On the Eastern Glacier on the southern side of Mount Baker, girls will hike, carry their own equipment and camp in the mountains. The curriculum focuses on gathering glacial data in the field using scientific techniques and outdoor skills.
Eligibility Requirements: All girls ages 15 to 18 that have shown a keen interest in science and the outdoors and are in good physical condition are welcome to apply.
Dates: July 28-August 7 Fees: Free to girls who qualify via a merit-based application process.
