| Participants will spend a week learning about material science and engineering and careers in the field. Activities include group projects, visits to labs and local industries, guest presentations and a design-build contest. Past projects have included microelectronic circuitry, friction-stir welding, ceramic magnets, metal casting, glass processing, heat treatment and mechanical property evaluation, plasma-spray deposition and others. |

| This program provides students with a meaningful learning opportunity in science, exposes students to exhibit interpretation and facilitation techniques, and improves students’ communication skills. In addition to learning about cutting-edge science and sharing their enthusiasm with the public, students earn at least 20 community-service hours toward their high-school graduation requirement. This year, students will provide programming at the """"Evolving Planet"""" exhibition at the Field Museum. |

| This four-week program provides students with exposure to the principles of mathematics and basic sciences. The primary focus is computer education and laboratory activities. Students will visit area companies, exposing them to the applications of engineering in industry. The program runs from late June through late July. |

| ESP is a six-week residential program for high-school women and minority students. Participants will explore opportunities in engineering and prepare for college, with preparatory courses in math, science and engineering taught by University of Wisconsin professors. Students live on campus in residence halls and all meals are provided. |
| Eligibility Requirements: This is a program for minorities and girls entering grades 11 and 12 who have a GPA of at least 3.0. Students must have a strong interest in engineering and have taken at least one year of algebra, geometry and chemistry. |

| Girls on Ice is an eleven-day leadership program that combines mountaineering and science. On the Eastern Glacier on the southern side of Mount Baker, girls will hike, carry their own equipment and camp in the mountains. The curriculum focuses on gathering glacial data in the field using scientific techniques and outdoor skills. |
| Eligibility Requirements: All girls ages 15 to 18 that have shown a keen interest in science and the outdoors and are in good physical condition are welcome to apply. |

Evening activities range from astronomy and bioart to scientific scavenger hunts and talent shows. The camp culminates in a science fair, where students give demonstrations and presentations to their family and friends. |

| The Science Institute of Columbia College Chicago is looking for energetic, diligent, and inquisitive high school students to work in its research laboratory this summer. If you have an interest in science and scientific inquiry and technique, this is the ideal opportunity for you. Our research focuses on the biology of cancer with the hope of understanding its normal and abnormal development. During the summer, you will learn different scientific techniques used in the research laboratory, including how to work with cell cultures and design experiments using these cells. By the end of the summer you will be a bona fide Junior Research Scientist and will be able to coauthor on any published papers. |

| Listening to the River |

| Participants will team up with experienced staff from Land Information Access Association for technology and watershed investigations in the Grand Traverse area of northern Michigan. They will use digital and video cameras along with high-end sound recording equipment to record sights and sounds on rivers, beaches and out-of-the-way places throughout the Grand Traverse Watershed. They will use GPS units to geo-reference collected images and sounds then translate them into digital maps, radio and TV stories. Work will be posted on the Listening to the River project web site and will be incorporated into a new exhibit for the Great Lakes Children’s Museum. |

| MITES is a rigorous six-week residential, academic enrichment program for promising high-school juniors who are interested in studying and exploring careers in science, engineering and entrepreneurship. The program is rooted in MIT's belief in the importance of having minorities and other underrepresented segments of the population pursue education and careers in these fields. The program is 100% scholarship-based. Funding from industry, foundations and individuals covers living and educational expenses; students pay only for their transportation to and from MIT. |
| Eligibility Requirements: High-school juniors of all ethnicities are considered, particularly students who come from challenging backgrounds and must overcome significant odds to pursue their dreams of becoming an engineer or scientist. |
