The AIM program offers 12 local high-school students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to engage in a variety of clinical hands-on experiences. The intensive six-week program has been designed to increase awareness of common medical problems in underserved communities and career opportunities in fields of medicine. College First: Science, College and Careers Topic(s): Ecology
Chicago Botanic Gardens

College First is a dynamic paid internship program for eligible CPS students, consisting of part career mentorship, part field ecology and conservation science, and part college prep and assistance. For eight weeks, students in the program explore potential science careers and use the Garden's resources to learn about native ecosystems and plants. A portion of each day is spent with a mentor from the Garden staff, and the other portion in group instruction. During monthly meetings over the school year, emphasis is also placed on college as a pathway to any career and guidance is given.
Eligibility Requirements: Current college Students. Bus stops through the city are offered since the Garden is in a northern suburb; applicants must be able to get to a designated stop as early as 7am. See web site and application for bus stops.

CVS/Pharmacy Workforce Development Summer Enrichment Program Topic(s): Pharmacology
University of Illinois at Chicago

This eight-week program exposes underrepresented minority high-school students to pharmacy and other related health professions. Students experience work-based learning, personal and leadership development, and mentoring as well as college-level academic enrichment activities. Three weeks are spent on daily courses and shadowing pharmacy technicians; five weeks are spent in an internship environment at CVS pharmacies. Attendance for all portions is mandatory.

Engineering Summer Program (ESP) Topic(s): Engineering
University of Wisconsin - Madison

ESP is a six-week residential program for high-school women and minority students. Participants will explore opportunities in engineering and prepare for college, with preparatory courses in math, science and engineering taught by University of Wisconsin professors. Students live on campus in residence halls and all meals are provided.
Eligibility Requirements: This is a program for minorities and girls entering grades 11 and 12 who have a GPA of at least 3.0. Students must have a strong interest in engineering and have taken at least one year of algebra, geometry and chemistry.

High School Summer Research Institute for Underrepresented Students Topic(s): Bio-Medical
Creighton University

This eight-week summer research program is designed to increase the number of ethnic minorities who are involved in bio-medical research. This program will provide five high-school students with the opportunity to participate in a summer research experience at a bio-medical facility at Creighton University. Each student is paired with a mentor/faculty researcher, who will work with the students on a specific bio-medical research project. The program includes a trip to Washington, D.C., to the National Institutes of Health, and it is the expectation that every student who completes the program attend.
Eligibility Requirements: Students from minority groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, who a B or better grade average in math and science and have completed grade 10 by the start of the program are eligible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Marlott Family Zoo Intern Program (ZIP) Topic(s): Zoology
Lincoln Park Zoo
Chicago, IL Grade(s): 9 to 10, 11 to 12
The Zoo Intern Program is a six-week summer internship for underserved high-school students ages 16 to 18. Each spring, 20 to 25 first-year interns and 5 to 10 second-year interns are selected. Interns are trained by the zoo staff and scientists for eight days and then serve six weeks as paid zoo interpreters. Students identify conservational and environmental issues and help develop interpretive stations on these topics for zoo visitors. They also meet animal-care staff and researchers, and take part in behind-the-scenes tours of several animal buildings.
Eligibility Requirements: Students age 15 to 18 who are City of Chicago residents are welcome to apply. Applicants must be 15 by July 5.

Medical Center Engineering High School Internship Program Topic(s): Multiple Focus

The high-school internship program is designed for junior and senior high school students, in conjunction with Rush University Medical Center Engineering (MCE). Medical Center engineering interns work as assistants during the first shift, Monday through Friday, under the direct instruction of engineers from various shops (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, electronics, carpentry, painting and inventory.) Interns receive extensive hands-on training during the school year to boost reading, math, science and technology skills needed to enter the trades.

Pre-College Research Participation Program Topic(s): Multiple Focus

This is an eight-week program in which college-bound students participate in laboratory research under the direction of Argonne scientists. Students will be selected by Argonne scientists and engineers who will provide research experience in areas such as biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, materials science, mathematics and physics.
Eligibility Requirements: Graduating 12th graders who have a GPA of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale, are Illinois residents, are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and are enrolled to attend college in the fall of 2008 are eligible.

Research Opportunity for Academic Development in Science (ROADS) Topic(s): Health and Medicine

The ROADS program allows 12 local high-school students from diverse backgrounds interested in science to serve as research fellows for seven weeks. Each student assists a Medical College of Wisconsin faculty investigator who acts as their mentor on a research project. Students are chosen based on recommendations, academic accomplishments and an interview. The program is designed to provide participants with a meaningful experience in a health-related field and to stimulate their interest in careers in science, medicine and biomedical research. This program offers a bimonthly stipend.
