Project Exploration

This program provides students with a meaningful learning opportunity in science, exposes students to exhibit interpretation and facilitation techniques, and improves students’ communication skills. In addition to learning about cutting-edge science and sharing their enthusiasm with the public, students earn at least 20 community-service hours toward their high-school graduation requirement. This year, students will provide programming at the """"Evolving Planet"""" exhibition at the Field Museum.
Eligibility Requirements: All Chicago Public School students entering grades 10 through 12.

Ecology Counselor in Training Topic(s): Environmental and Conservation Science
City of Evanston
Evanston, IL Grade(s): 6 to 8, 9 to 10
In this program, students will learn what it takes to be a camp counselor. They will spend the first two weeks training in communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork skills. During the second two weeks, participants will work as a counselor for either Kinglet Camp or EcoQuest Camp. They will also learn about topics such as responsible resource use, how to be a good Eco role model and how to help campers to be more Earth friendly.
Eligibility Requirements: Students entering grades 7 through 9 are welcome to apply.

Health Science Enrichment Program (HSEP) Topic(s): Health and Medicine

This program is for students interested in careers in the health professions. It seeks to increase participants' awareness of career opportunities in the field, and the level of academic rigor required to succeed in these careers, as well as laboratory research methods, scientific computing, and scientific research-paper writing. Advanced students will have the opportunity to get involved in research projects at UIC.
Eligibility Requirements: Students currently in grades 9 through 12 who are members of underrepresented populations are eligible to apply.

Morton Arboretum Children's Garden Youth Volunteers (Macgyvers) Topic(s): Botany
Morton Arboretum
Lisle, IL Grade(s): 6 to 8, 9 to 10
The Macgyvers program has two branches, each of which provide youth with an authentic, meaningful way to contribute to the Arboretum. In the naturalist branch, students facilitate educational activities for guests throughout the garden and develop skills in public speaking, early childhood development and environmental interpretation. In the gardener's branch, students plan, plant, maintain, and harvest specific gardens, and develop skills in soil management, garden design, plant selection, harvesting of edible plants and ornamental gardening.
Eligibility Requirements: Students must be entering grades 7 through 9, have a strong interest in the natural world and/or gardening and enjoy working with children.

Science First Topic(s): Environmental and Conservation Science
Chicago Botanic Gardens

Science First is a great learning opportunity, a chance to see the Garden's 385 acres of plants and nature, and a great way to meet other science-curious students during the summer. Forty students from Chicago Public Schools will travel to the Garden by school bus, where they will be immersed in free, nature-based science enrichment for four weeks.
Eligibility Requirements: Students from Chicago Public Schools who are finishing grades 7, 8 or 9 in June of 2008. Bus stops through the city are offered since the Garden is in a northern suburb; applicants must be able to get to a designated stop as early as 7am. See web site an

Science Minors Topic(s): Multiple Focus
Museum of Science and Industry

Science Minors are a corps of teenage “explainers” at the Museum of Science and Industry. These young people fulfill service-learning requirements, learn about science, make friends and meet professionals in science careers while sharing information about exhibits with museum visitors. This program bridges the worlds of school and work; participants in the Science Minors program develop their job skills and increase their knowledge of science and science careers through their involvement with Museum staff and other Science Minors resources.

Service Learning Days Topic(s): Animal Science
Anti-Cruelty Society

The Anti-Cruelty Society's Service Learning Days program offers volunteer opportunities that require only a single-day commitment, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, during which students work with animals and learn about the function of an animal shelter by participating in small projects. Volunteers earn five community-service hours. Students may attend two days per year.

Summer Science Residential Academy Topic(s): Health and Medicine
University of Kansas Medical Center / Kansas Community College
Lawrence, KS Grade(s): 9 to 10, 11 to 12
Participants in this eight-week health-career academy stay at the University of Kansas, Lawrence Campus. The program is facilitated by a multicultural team of science, math, arts and language-arts professionals. It includes hands-on NIH lab workshops, Kaplan ACT preparation, project-based computer classes, medical and science internships in the Greater Kansas City area and integrated arts and poetry workshops, which include a performance at Blue Room in Kansas City.
Eligibility Requirements: Underserved and minority students from Kansas City, Kansas, public-schools are welcome to apply. Students must be in grades 9 through 12, with a GPA of 2.8 or above.

The Field Museum

This program provides an opportunity for teen volunteers to learn interactive techniques, participate in hands-on activities, and interact with museum guests. Volunteers will work directly with the museum's Department of Education on programs and activities serving younger visitors and families. This summer, volunteers will work with the new permanent exhibition """"Ancient Americas,"""" and scheduled activities include Story Time, Maya Glyphs, an Aztec Sun Stone matching game.

Teen Volunteer Program Topic(s): Astronomy
Adler Planetarium
Chicago, IL Grade(s): 9 to 10, 11 to 12
Student volunteers provide educational activities for visitors to the planetarium through tours, demonstrations, experiments, storytelling and costumed characters. Volunteers learn about space science and share knowledge with visitors while fulfilling their service-learning requirements. Participants will also conduct scientific demonstrations, take part in crafts and other hands-on activities related to astronomy, answer questions and explain ideas presented in the exhibits to visitors.
Eligibility Requirements: Students over age 15 who enjoy working with the public and are interested in learning about science, particularly astronomy, are welcome to apply.
