Services for Girls

Girls participate in programs designed specifically with them in mind—Sisters4Science, All Girls Expedition, Girls’ Health and Science Day, and Women in Science. These different program strategies complement each other to get girls interested in science, build their capacity to understand science, and offer opportunities to continue their interest in science.

S4S Sisters4Science
Sisters4Science is a year-round after-school and field program that combines science exploration with leadership development for approximately 100 minority middle school girls. Currently, the program is run in partnership with five schools across Chicago—Perspectives Charter School—Calumet Campus, Perspectives Charter School—Rodney D. Joslin Campus, Reavis Elementary School, and Young Women’s Leadership Charter School.

The program goals are to:

  • Create a safe space for girls to explore science and develop leadership skills.
  • Expose girls to the wide variety of roles played by women in science.
  • Improve girls’ overall attitudes about science by developing team building, communication, and leadership skills.

Girls participate in hands-on science activities led by women scientists as well as participate in science-based field trips. The interests of the girls drive the curriculum; in the past, participants have investigated topics ranging from genetics to chemistry to girls’ health. Sessions are held weekly at each school site.

Women in Science
The Women in Science program seeks to establish a cohort of women scientists who maintain a commitment to the organization’s outreach and our youth. Through Women in Science, Project Exploration will recruit and provide public outreach opportunities for women scientists interested in sharing their work with youth and the public. These women will then have the opportunity to be guest lecturers in our youth programs and be available to the public by request. By building upon existing relationships with women scientists, we aim to increase the diversity of Women in Science as it pertains to science disciplines, academic vita, career practice, race, and ethnicity.
