Sisters 4 Science 2003 Wrap Up

Sisters4ScienceProject Exploration’s Sisters4Science an after-school program for girls that combines natural science explorations with leadership development experiences for minority middle school girls. This year Sisters4Science was run in partnership with two schools, Triumphant Charter School and Young Women’s Leadership Charter School; over 40 girls ages 12-16 participated in the program.

To the girls, Sisters4Science is…

Sisters4ScienceNEW POSSIBILITIES
“Sisters4Science makes me think of the world in a wider spectrum.”
The girls in Sisters4Science come together once a week to explore the world. Our weekly after school sessions are two-hour investigations into ourselves and the natural world around us. In all their endeavors, the girls in Sisters4Science challenge themselves to expand their horizons and consider new possibilities.

UNITY
“Sister4Science taught me about togetherness and how to ask questions about myself and others.” Sisters4Science is a safe space where girls can come together to be themselves. Sisters4Science maintains an open door policy- all girls are welcome to attend. Together, the girls set and uphold their code of conduct- Sisters4Science ask questions and respond to the questions asked of us. In Sisters, all girls feel comfortable discussing all questions.

Sisters4ScienceSCIENTIFIC INQURY
“Sisters4Science is about learning about science and how to talk to and relate to other people, including scientists.”

This year Sisters4Science worked with 18 women scientists. Women scientists came with us on all of our field trips, facilitated labs, and shared their life experiences with the group.

Before meeting a scientist, the Sisters brainstormed questions to ask them and every girl set a goal of asking at least one question to our guest.

Sisters4ScienceFUN
“Sisters4Science is special because the main purpose here is to have fun while learning.” Girls’ interests drive the program. We survey the girls at the beginning of the program to learn what topics and experiences they want to cover in the year. We then craft the curriculum based on these interests. We periodically check in with the girls to make sure the program is meeting and exceeding their expectations.
